Maria Lantin | I Am Afraid | TEDxECUAD Presentation

Maria Lantin was invited to present, I AM AFRAID, during the TEDxECUAD: Bringing the Gap conference on March 25, 2017 at the Emily Carr University of Art + Design, in Vancouver, BC.

TEDxECUAD’s mission is to bring together a dynamic group of thinkers and doers in a provocative setting that builds new connections to lead to progress and collaboration, and take participants to a next level of thought and action. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TED Talks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection.

Granted her PhD in Computer Science by Simon Fraser University, Maria Lantin’s doctoral focus was biological visualization, particularly the development of plants at the cellular level. Her research led to the production of an extensive software project used by biologists to conduct virtual experiments with results published in Annals of Botany. Maria later served as assistant professor at TechBC, senior researcher at Mainframe Entertainment developing 3D-stereo projection software for IMAX screens, and research director at award winning IDELIX Software Inc., one of the few successful visualization companies. Lantin led Banff Centre’s Visualization Lab for 3 years and now directs Intersections Digital Studio where she helps create an inspiring and welcoming environment for interdisciplinary research at Emily Carr University of Art + Design. She also continues her collaborative visualization practice in the domains of quantum information science, human conversation and virtual reality.

Santiago Tavera recently participated in the Intersection | Cross-section conference at Ryerson University and York University in Toronto, where he exhibited his work, Translational Spaces. He also gave a talk as part of an artist panel discussion titled, Identities Across Borders.

Isadora is a great user-friendly tool for quickly and easily bringing media into live performance and installation. It can be used for projection mapping, triggering sound and video, lighting, VJing, camera tracking, and much more. The best thing is, you don’t need to be a programmer to work with it.

This workshop will give you an introduction to the Isadora workshop, help you understand the interface and quickly have you building your own performative video tools, but most importantly, it will give you a chance to experiment and play!

Screening at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria | Leila Sujir

On February 25 Leila Sujir presented her film For Jackson: A Time Capsule from his Two Grandmothers. Leila Sujir’s nephew, Jakson Sujir was also present for the screen.

For Jackson: A Time Capsule from his Two Gramothers is a documentary portrait of two Canadian women, Rosemary Brown (1930-2003), BC’s first black MLA, and Ruth Horricks-Sujir (b. 1925) who as a young woman, moved to India. The film creates a time capsule for their young grandson, Jackson, who is a hip-hop artist and rapper in Vancouver. Leila Sujir compiled video footage over many years to explore memory, as well as archival material in film and photography to piece together the histories of Jackson’s grandmothers. She moves the viewer through the geographies and journeys of the women’s lives.

IdeaLabs- Micro-presentations and Macro-explorations in Fine Arts | Montreal

We are happy to announce Professor Leila Sujir and graduate MA student Oslavi Linares will be participating in the upcoming IdeaLabs, February 8th from 7-9pm. This will take place at Concordia University (EV Building room 11.705).

Every IdeaLab is an experimental forum. Fine arts faculty, students and alumni experience flash insights, cultivate ideas and collaborate and co-create the future together. The first phase is an idea slam: faculty, students, and alumni micro-present illuminating projects, programs and potent ideas at play in our faculty. The second phase is unscripted. Presenters and participants discuss, connect and imagine. Our Urban Curator, Shauna Janssen moderates. IdeaLabs act out micro and macro explorations of what we do as a Faculty and seek out where art, design, performance, pre-professional and scholarly activity in the cultural sphere might go in the future. We host several IdeaLabs throughout the academic year.

IdeaLabs are open to the whole Concordia community and to all friends-of-Fine-Arts in the public realm. First come, first seated. IdeaLab is presented by the Office of the Dean of Fine Arts.

“For Jackson” Video Screening & Discussion at AGGV | Leila Sujir

In collaboration with the BC Black History Awareness Society and MediaNet, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria will be screening FOR JACKSON: A TIME CAPSULE (2004; 49 mins) a video by Leila Sujir.

Date: Saturday, February 25, 2017 at 2:00pm

The screening will be followed by a Q&A and discussion with the artist, Leila Sujir and her nephew Jackson Sujir, to whom the film is dedicated.

STÉPHANE QUERREC- TO MAKE A BREAK, TO MAKE A CUT: MEDIA ART IN PUBLIC SPACE

On Wednesday, November 9th, 2016, The Elastic Spaces art lab invited visiting artist Stephane Querrec (a French artist based in Berlin) to talk about his artistic process at Concordia University with over 30 students, researchers and faculty members. Gathered in the 11th floor resource centre of Milieux Institute for Arts, Culture and Technology, Querrec shared his exploration of public spaces through the use of video, performance and text-based works. After discussing his interest in pedestrian spaces to confront, challenge and invite viewers to become active participants in his work, Querrec invited the audience to engage in a conversation to discuss the possible challenges, ethical and technical constraints with these type of works. Querrec focused on his use of text to question the voice of the artist and the spectator, and how to place the work in a middle ground where the message is affected by the general public.

Stephane Querrec’s 5 week residency in Montreal culminated in the creation of his latest project, The Complaint, exhibited at the Screen Mosaic at the Georges-Émile-Lapalme corridor at Place des Arts. This work opened to general public Thursday, November 10th, 2016 at 5pm.
